New Year's Eve Reading

celebrated around the world.  In many countries, New
Year's Day is a holiday.  This is January 1st, and it is the first
day of the year in the Western calendar.

In North America, New Year's falls in the middle of winter
holidays. It is only a week after Christmas, and the students
are on vacation.

On December 31st, people begin to prepare for the new
year.  This means parties and celebrations.  In larger cities,
festivals are held with music and fireworks at midnight.  The
most famous is in New York City where a large ball is
dropped in
Times Square.

For most people, New Year's Eve is a time for parties and
social events.  Bars and nightclubs are very busy, and many
people host parties in their homes.

Everything leads to the countdown to the new year.  With
10 seconds remaining in the year, people begin to shout out
the countdown:  "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Happy New
Year!!"  Then everyone hugs and kisses and wishes all a
happy new year.  Usually the famous New Year's Eve song is
played at 12:00 am.  This song is
Auld Lang Syne, and you
probably recognize the tune.

Around the world, people have different traditions on New
Year's Eve.  Most of these traditions are for good luck.  In
North America, there are few traditions, and people mainly
kiss and hug those around them.  However, in other
countries, people do things for good luck throughout the
new year.

In Spain, people eat 12 grapes and make a wish for each
grape.  In Mexico, people wear yellow or red underwear on
New Year's Eve.  Red, if the person wants to find love in the
coming year, and yellow if the person wants to make more
money.  People also bring out their luggage and wish for the
chance to take a vacation in the upcoming year.

In many countries, people clean their houses on New Year's
Eve.  This represents cleaning out the old and preparing for
the new.

Many people make a new year's resolution, which is a type
of promise to do something differently and be a better
person.  Some common new year's resolutions are to quit
smoking or lose weight.

After the parties end and the people go home, New Year's
Day follows.  This is a holiday in most countries, so nobody
has to work.  Most people relax and spend the day with
family and friends.  Some families like to have a large meal
similar to
Christmas or Thanksgiving.  In the U.S., there are
many college football games on this day.  These "bowl
games" are the end of the college football season.

New Year's is a great time to remember the past and look to
the future.  It is a chance to start fresh, and people are full
of hope for the new year.
